Most patients who have bad experiences with dental tourism in Turkey share one thing in common: they did not ask the right questions before committing. The information needed to make a safe, informed decision is almost always available — it simply requires asking for it. This guide gives you the exact questions to ask at every stage of the process, and what the answers should tell you.

Questions to Ask During Your Initial Enquiry

The first interaction with a clinic or patient coordinator is the most revealing. How they respond to these questions tells you almost everything about how they will treat you:

"Can you tell me the name and qualifications of the dentist who will perform my treatment?"

Why it matters: A clinic that cannot or will not name your dentist before you book is a serious red flag. You have the right to know who will be working in your mouth, verify their credentials with the Turkish Dental Association, and research their specific experience.

"What diagnostic records do you need from me before you can propose a treatment plan?"

Why it matters: The correct answer is: X-rays at minimum, and ideally a full OPG panoramic radiograph. Any clinic that quotes a price or proposes a treatment plan before reviewing diagnostic imaging is guessing — and making commercial decisions rather than clinical ones.

"Can you provide me with a written treatment plan that I can have reviewed independently?"

Why it matters: Reputable clinics will readily provide written treatment plans. Clinics that resist this, or want you to commit before providing documentation, are not operating transparently.

Questions to Ask When Reviewing Your Treatment Plan

Once you have received a written treatment plan, these questions help you evaluate whether it is clinically appropriate:

"Why are these specific teeth being treated?"

For veneers or crowns

Why it matters: Understanding why each tooth is included helps you identify whether teeth are being treated for clinical reasons or to increase the number of units billed. Healthy teeth with minor discolouration should not require full crown preparation.

"What is the condition of my existing teeth and gum health?"

For any treatment

Why it matters: No restorative treatment should be placed over unhealthy gums or active decay. If the clinic does not address existing periodontal issues first, the restorations will fail prematurely and the underlying disease will worsen.

"What specific implant brand will be used, and can I have the implant passport?"

For implants

Why it matters: Implant brand matters. Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Osstem, and Dentsply Sirona are internationally recognised brands with proven long-term data. A clinic using unknown or generic implants at a low price is cutting corners on the most critical component of the treatment.

"What happens if the treatment needs adjustment or revision after I return home?"

For any treatment

Why it matters: Understanding the warranty, revision policy, and how the clinic handles complications remotely is essential. Get this in writing before you travel.

"Is a bone graft needed, and what material will be used?"

For implants with bone deficiency

Why it matters: If bone grafting is recommended, ask specifically what grafting material will be used (autograft, xenograft, synthetic) and whether the clinic has the equipment and surgeon experience to perform this safely.

Questions to Ask During Your Clinic Visit

Even after arriving in Turkey, it is not too late to ask critical questions before treatment begins:

"Can I see the X-rays you have taken and have them explained to me?"

"Which specific materials are being used for my restoration today, and can I see the product labels?"

"Is this the dentist who will perform all stages of my treatment, or will it be shared between multiple clinicians?"

"What aftercare instructions should I follow when I return home?"

"What should I do if I experience pain, sensitivity, or a problem after I leave Turkey?"

Red Answer Patterns: What Bad Responses Look Like

Knowing what a bad answer sounds like is as important as knowing what to ask:

Responses That Should Concern You

  • "Don't worry about the details — our dentists are all experienced and qualified." (Deflection instead of specifics)
  • "We don't usually share treatment plans until you have confirmed your booking." (Commercial gating of clinical information)
  • "All our veneers use the best quality materials." (Vague non-answer about materials)
  • "We can do everything you need in just 4 days." (Unrealistic timeline for complex work)
  • "We have hundreds of 5-star reviews so you know you can trust us." (Social proof substituted for clinical transparency)
  • "You don't need a second opinion — it will just confuse you." (Active resistance to independent oversight)

The Value of Having Questions Answered Independently

Even with the right questions, evaluating the answers requires clinical knowledge that most patients understandably do not have.
