Turkey Dental Holiday: What to Expect Before, During and After

Planning a dental trip to Turkey involves more than booking a flight and a clinic. The patients who have the smoothest, most successful experiences are the ones who plan systematically — from the clinical preparation months before they travel to the aftercare arrangements they have in place for when they return home. This guide walks you through every stage.

Before You Go: 3 to 6 Months Out

The preparation phase is the most important and the most overlooked. The decisions you make before you book anything will determine the quality of your outcome more than almost anything that happens in Turkey.

1

Gather your current dental records

Ask your local dentist for your most recent X-rays, particularly an OPG (panoramic X-ray). This is the foundation of any treatment plan. Do not rely on the Turkish clinic to take the first set — having prior records allows for meaningful comparison.

2

Get quotes from multiple clinics

Contact 2 to 3 clinics in Turkey. Provide the same diagnostic images to each and ask for a comparable treatment plan. Be specific about what you want, and ask each clinic to specify the implant brand, ceramic material, and who will perform each procedure.

3

Have treatment plans independently reviewed

This is the step most patients skip and the one I would argue is most essential. An independent dentist can identify over-treatment, verify that materials are as claimed, confirm the timeline is clinically sound, and flag any aspects that require clarification.

4

Arrange travel and medical insurance

Standard travel insurance rarely covers dental complications. Look specifically for policies covering medical evacuation and complications arising from elective dental treatment abroad. Some specialised dental tourism insurance products exist.

5

Establish a local aftercare dentist

Find a dentist at home who is willing to provide follow-up care and manage any post-treatment complications. Brief them on your planned treatment before you travel.

Choosing Your Location: Istanbul, Antalya, Izmir, or Ankara?

Turkey's dental tourism is concentrated in four cities, each with a distinct character:

Istanbul

Turkey's dental capital. The highest concentration of experienced implantologists, prosthodontists, and specialist practitioners. Best option for complex cases. Excellent international connectivity.

Antalya

The most popular destination for "sun and smile" packages. Combines dental treatment with a holiday. Good range of clinics, with plenty of mid-range options. More tourist-oriented, which has both advantages and disadvantages.

Izmir

Turkey's third-largest city. Excellent quality-to-price ratio with less tourist-market saturation than Istanbul or Antalya. Good flight connections from several European cities.

Ankara

The capital. Strong academic dental scene linked to major universities. Less focused on dental tourism but has excellent specialist practitioners. Worth considering for complex specialist referrals.

During Your Trip: What to Expect

On your first day at the clinic, a thorough new patient assessment should take place before any treatment begins. This includes updated X-rays (typically CBCT for implant cases), clinical examination, and a consultation with the dentist who will perform your treatment. If the clinic moves straight to treatment without this assessment, that is a serious concern.

Keep written records of everything: the treatment plan, the consent forms, the materials used, and any post-operative instructions. Photograph your teeth before treatment begins. Take video of any explanations given about your treatment plan. This documentation is invaluable if complications arise later.

Most patients need 5 to 10 days in Turkey for their first visit. Build in recovery time — implant surgery and extractions cause swelling and discomfort. Travelling home the day after major surgery is uncomfortable and inadvisable.

After You Return: The Aftercare Phase

Follow-up care after returning home is critical and often under-discussed. For implant cases, you will need:

  • Check-up with your local dentist within 2 weeks of returning
  • Panoramic X-ray at 3 months to assess osseointegration progress
  • Immediate contact with your Turkish clinic and local dentist if any pain, swelling, or implant mobility occurs
  • Avoidance of hard foods and contact sports during the healing phase
  • Strict oral hygiene protocol as instructed by the treating dentist

For veneer cases, monitor for sensitivity, bite discomfort, and any changes in how the restorations feel. Early issues are far easier to address than those left to develop for months.

How an Independent Consultant Makes This Process Smoother

Every stage of the process above is easier with independent clinical support. From reviewing treatment plans before you commit to guiding your aftercare at home, a consultant who knows Turkey's dental landscape intimately can save you significant time, money, and stress.
