Teeth Whitening in Turkey: A Practical Guide for Dental Tourists
Table of Contents
Teeth whitening is the most popular add-on treatment for patients already travelling to Turkey for dental work — and one of the most worthwhile. It is a low-risk, reversible procedure with consistent results when done correctly. This guide is specifically for patients planning whitening as part of a dental trip: how to plan the timing, what to expect, and how to integrate it with other treatments you may be having.
Planning the Timing of Whitening on Your Trip
Timing is the most important planning consideration for whitening, particularly if you are combining it with veneers, crowns, or other restorative work:
The Non-Negotiable Sequence
- 1Whiten first: If you are also getting veneers or crowns, whitening must be completed before any tooth preparation. Restorations are colour-matched to your whitened teeth.
- 2Wait 2–4 weeks before shade selection: The whitened shade takes time to stabilise. Immediately matching crowns to post-whitening colour can result in restorations that are slightly off once the shade settles.
- 3Then proceed with restorations: Veneers, crowns, or composite bonding are matched to the finalised whitened shade.
In practice, most dental tourism patients do not have the luxury of a 2–4 week waiting period between whitening and shade matching on a single trip. The realistic approach for same-trip treatment is to whiten at the start of the trip, allow 48–72 hours for initial stabilisation, then proceed with shade matching for restorations while understanding that a small degree of further whitening may occur. An experienced clinic will account for this in the shade selection.
What to Expect During and After In-Office Whitening
Before the appointment
A brief examination confirms that whitening is appropriate. Active gum disease, untreated cavities, or cracked teeth should be addressed first — whitening on compromised teeth increases sensitivity risk.
During the session
The dentist isolates the gums with a protective barrier, applies the whitening gel, and activates it with a light source. Sessions typically run 45–90 minutes with 2–4 applications of gel.
Immediately after
Teeth will appear lighter — often noticeably so. Some sensitivity is normal and typically resolves within 24–48 hours. Avoid staining foods and drinks (coffee, red wine, beetroot) for 48 hours.
The following days
The shade continues to lighten slightly as post-whitening dehydration of enamel corrects. The final stable shade is typically visible 1–2 weeks after treatment.
Should You Get Take-Home Trays?
Custom-fitted take-home whitening trays are worth requesting alongside in-office whitening, particularly if you want to maintain the result or top up at home. Reputable Turkish clinics charge €80–€150 for a set of custom trays with a supply of whitening gel — considerably less than UK equivalent pricing.
Benefits of Take-Home Trays
- Maintain and extend the in-office result
- Useful for touch-ups every 6–12 months
- Lower concentration gel = lower sensitivity risk
- Can be used on a schedule that suits you at home
Limitations
- Results take 2–4 weeks of daily use
- Not effective as a standalone option if you need fast results
- Trays must fit precisely — poorly fitting trays cause gel leakage and gum irritation
- Replacement gel may be difficult to source at home without a prescription
Is It Worth Travelling to Turkey Purely for Whitening?
Whitening alone is generally not worth the cost and logistics of an international trip. The saving over a UK dentist (typically £150–£300) does not justify flights and accommodation when you consider the full cost of travel.
However, if you are already in Turkey for another dental procedure — or planning a trip primarily for veneers, crowns, or implants — adding whitening to your treatment plan is almost always worthwhile. The incremental cost is low, the clinical benefit is real, and the sequencing works naturally within a multi-procedure trip.
